BOISE, ID – A developing storm system is expected to bring widespread rain, isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds to southwestern Idaho Thursday, October 22, before a cold front sends temperatures sharply lower heading into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Boise, a slow moving low pressure system will produce widespread rain showers Thursday through early Friday, October 23. Stronger thunderstorms could bring locally heavy rainfall and gusty outflow winds.
The forecast shows precipitation chances increasing significantly Thursday afternoon and evening across the Treasure Valley and surrounding communities.
Boise could see precipitation probabilities reach 80% to 95% Thursday evening into early Friday. Similar high probabilities are forecast for Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell and several surrounding locations.
Mountain communities, including Bogus Basin, could experience precipitation chances approaching 100% during the storm's peak.
Temperatures will initially remain relatively mild Thursday, with Boise reaching approximately 70 degrees, Meridian near 70 degrees and Mountain Home around 74 degrees.
However, the approaching cold front will bring noticeably cooler conditions Friday and into the weekend.
Boise's afternoon high is expected to fall to approximately 57 degrees Friday, followed by 59 degrees Saturday. Overnight temperatures could drop to 36 degrees by Saturday morning.
Other communities will experience even colder conditions.
Baker City is forecast to reach 28 degrees Friday morning and 17 degrees Saturday morning. Burns could fall to 23 degrees Friday and 13 degrees Saturday, while Fairfield may drop to 21 degrees Saturday morning.
McCall could see overnight temperatures near 21 degrees Saturday, with Bogus Basin around 29 degrees.
Drivers should prepare for wet roadways, reduced visibility during heavier showers and potentially hazardous conditions during thunderstorms.
Gusty winds may also affect travel following the frontal passage Friday through the weekend.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts, particularly in colder mountain and valley communities where overnight freezing temperatures could affect outdoor activities and exposed vegetation.
