Honolulu, HI – A busy tropical weather setup continues Tuesday across the central and eastern Pacific, with Hurricane Nolo several hundred miles west of Honolulu and another disturbance near Hawaii carrying a high chance of developing into a tropical depression.
According to the National Hurricane Center, its 5 a.m. PDT Eastern Pacific Tropical Weather Outlook listed three active named systems: Hurricane Nolo west of Hawaii, Hurricane Polo near Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula and Tropical Storm Rachel several hundred miles south southwest of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico.
The NHC is also watching an area of low pressure well east southeast of the Hawaiian Islands. Forecasters said the disturbance was producing limited showers and thunderstorms Tuesday morning, but only a slight increase in organization would be needed for a tropical depression to form during the next day or two.
The disturbance has a 90% chance of tropical cyclone formation within 48 hours and a 90% chance over the next seven days, according to the outlook. It was moving slowly east northeastward.
Forecasters said environmental conditions are expected to become less favorable for further development later this week.
For Hawaii, the outlook shown Tuesday morning does not indicate that either Hurricane Nolo or the developing disturbance will make landfall. Nolo was positioned several hundred miles west of Honolulu, while the separate low pressure area remained east southeast of the Hawaiian Islands.
Farther east, Polo and Rachel remain active near western Mexico. The NHC is issuing separate advisories for all three named storms as forecasters monitor their tracks and intensity.
