Savannah, GA – A tornado watch is in effect across portions of Georgia and South Carolina this Saturday afternoon, putting 22 counties under a severe weather alert through 8 p.m. EDT. Communities near Savannah, Charleston and surrounding inland areas are being urged to remain weather aware as the evening approaches.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 679 was issued at 1:50 p.m. EDT Saturday, Oct. 10, and remains in effect until 8 p.m. EDT. The watch covers 11 counties in Georgia and 11 counties in South Carolina, along with adjacent coastal waters.
In Georgia, the watch includes Bulloch, Burke, Candler, Effingham, Emanuel, Evans, Jefferson, Jenkins, Screven, Tattnall and Toombs counties.
In South Carolina, affected counties include Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Hampton, Jasper and Orangeburg.
The watch also extends into Charleston Harbor and coastal waters from the South Santee River to Edisto Beach, South Carolina, and from Edisto Beach to Savannah, Georgia, extending 20 nautical miles offshore.
A tornado watch means atmospheric conditions are favorable for tornado development, but it does not mean a tornado has been confirmed. Residents should monitor updated forecasts and be prepared to act quickly if a tornado warning is issued.
Drivers traveling through southeastern Georgia or South Carolina's Lowcountry should remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions. Anyone outdoors, particularly near coastal communities, should identify a sturdy shelter location before storms approach.
If a tornado warning is issued, residents should move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows.
The watch is scheduled to expire at 8 p.m. Saturday, although the National Weather Service may update or cancel portions of the alert earlier as conditions change.
