Peachtree City, GA – An extended stretch of dry weather will end across north and central Georgia this weekend, with several rounds of showers and thunderstorms possible from Friday through Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, locally heavy rainfall could develop during the period, with the highest amounts currently expected along the Interstate 85 corridor. Forecast confidence in exact rainfall totals remains lower than normal.
Localized storm totals of 3 to 4 inches are possible from Friday afternoon through Monday afternoon. The Weather Service said some locations could potentially exceed 5 inches, although considerable uncertainty remains over where the heaviest rain will fall.
A National Weather Service probability map shows roughly 40% to slightly above 50% chances of exceeding 2 inches of rainfall across many parts of the forecast area. Probabilities vary by location and do not mean every community will receive that amount.
Showers and thunderstorms will be possible each day from Friday through Monday. Forecasters said the highest confidence period for widespread rainfall begins Saturday afternoon and continues through early Monday.
Atlanta, Athens, Columbus, Macon and Rome are among the cities with increasing rain chances over the weekend, according to the agency’s four day outlook.
Because rainfall totals remain uncertain, localized amounts could differ substantially even within the same part of the state. The current forecast favors the I 85 corridor for the greatest totals but does not indicate that 3 to 4 inches will fall everywhere along that route.
