Blairsville, GA – A significant overnight cooldown is heading into north and central Georgia Saturday, October 17, with temperatures expected to fall into the 30s and 40s by Sunday morning, October 18. Northeast Georgia faces the greatest cold weather threat, where the season's first frost could damage sensitive plants and outdoor vegetation.
According to the National Weather Service NWS in Peachtree City, a Frost Advisory is in effect for portions of northeast Georgia from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday, October 18. Temperatures between 32°F and 36°F, combined with light winds, could allow frost to develop across affected communities.
Saturday Night, October 17: Temperatures Drop Across Georgia
Blairsville, GA, is forecast to reach approximately 33°F overnight, making it one of the coldest communities highlighted in the NWS forecast.
Nearby Dalton, GA, Rome, GA, and Jasper, GA, could each fall to 39°F, while Gainesville, GA, is expected to reach 42°F.
Farther south, Atlanta, GA, is forecast near 45°F, with Athens, GA, around 43°F and Carrollton, GA, near 40°F.
Central Georgia will remain somewhat warmer, with Macon, GA, near 46°F and Columbus, GA, around 47°F.
Sunday, October 18: Frost Advisory and Freeze Watch
The NWS has highlighted portions of northeast Georgia under a Frost Advisory, while areas farther north are also included in a Freeze Watch.
Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation, and unprotected plants may be killed if temperatures fall sufficiently low.
The greatest concern is in the mountain communities of northeast Georgia, where overnight temperatures will approach freezing.
What Residents Should Do Tonight
Residents in affected areas should bring potted plants indoors, cover sensitive gardens and protect vulnerable outdoor vegetation before temperatures fall Saturday evening.
Although Atlanta and much of central Georgia are expected to remain above freezing, the colder conditions will mark a noticeable change from recent temperatures.
Residents should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts for any changes to frost advisories or freeze alerts before Sunday morning.
