ATLANTA, GA – Residents across the southeastern United States could experience warmer than normal October weather and increased chances of wetter conditions in some southern areas beginning Friday, Oct. 16, as a new federal outlook highlights differing temperature and precipitation patterns through Tuesday, Oct. 20.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center, the 6 10 day outlook issued Saturday, Oct. 10, favors above normal temperatures across much of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida during the five day period.
Portions of Tennessee and the western Carolinas also lean toward above normal temperatures, while areas farther east across the Carolinas are closer to seasonal averages.
Florida shows one of the more consistent warm temperature signals in the Southeast, particularly across the peninsula.
Where Wetter Conditions Are Favored
NOAA's accompanying precipitation outlook indicates increased probabilities of above normal precipitation across Florida and portions of the Gulf Coast, including southern Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia.
The wetter signal is particularly notable across Florida, where much of the peninsula falls within an area favoring above normal precipitation.
Meanwhile, northern portions of Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas generally fall within areas favoring near normal precipitation.
Farther north and west, portions of Tennessee show increased probabilities of below normal precipitation.
These outlooks represent probabilities for the entire five day period and do not indicate specific rainfall totals or the timing of individual storms.
What Residents Should Know
The combination of warmer temperatures and increased precipitation probabilities could influence outdoor activities, weekend travel and fall events, particularly across Florida and the Gulf Coast.
However, the outlook does not establish a widespread flooding threat or predict severe thunderstorms.
Travelers along Interstate 10 and Interstate 75 should monitor local forecasts for updated rainfall timing and road conditions.
Residents across the Southeast are encouraged to check National Weather Service forecasts as Friday approaches for more precise daily temperatures and precipitation chances.
