Atlanta, GA – Residents across metro Atlanta and parts of north Georgia face heightened fire danger Monday, Oct. 19, as unusually dry afternoon air combines with northeast winds and dry vegetation. The National Weather Service is urging caution with outdoor burning as conditions become more favorable for fires to start and spread.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Special Weather Statement issued at 2:44 a.m. EDT Monday warns that relative humidity could fall to 30% or lower for four or more hours during the afternoon and evening.
Fire Danger Increases Across North Georgia The statement covers numerous north Georgia counties, including Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, Cherokee, Forsyth, Hall, Clayton, Fayette, Henry, Douglas and surrounding areas.
Forecasters expect northeast winds of 5 to 10 mph, which, combined with dry vegetation and low humidity, could create conditions favorable for fire growth.
The elevated concern extends from metro Atlanta into portions of north and west Georgia.
Although the statement identifies high fire danger, it does not announce a Red Flag Warning or report an active wildfire.
NWS Urges Caution With Outdoor Burning The Weather Service advises residents to check with local permitting authorities before burning outdoors.
Anyone conducting permitted outdoor burning should use extreme caution, as dry fuels can ignite more easily when humidity drops.
Residents should also avoid activities that could produce uncontrolled sparks or flames near dry grass, leaves and other vegetation.
The heightened fire danger is expected during the afternoon and into the evening Monday.
Atlanta Forecast Brings Sunshine and Warmer Temperatures Atlanta's forecast calls for sunny skies Monday with a high near 69 degrees. Northeast winds of 5 to 10 mph could gust as high as 15 mph.
Tuesday and Wednesday should reach approximately 74 degrees, followed by another sunny afternoon Thursday near 75 degrees.
Friday is forecast to remain sunny with a high near 73 degrees.
Weekend temperatures should stay pleasant, with highs near 70 degrees Saturday and 72 degrees Sunday.
Despite the comfortable afternoon temperatures, Monday's combination of low humidity and dry vegetation remains a concern.
Residents across north Georgia should monitor updated National Weather Service statements and local burn restrictions.
