Atlanta, GA – A widespread Flood Watch remains in effect across much of Georgia Saturday, with heavy rainfall potentially producing localized totals of up to 8 inches and raising concerns about flash flooding, overflowing waterways and dangerous travel conditions through Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, the Flood Watch covers large portions of northern, central, eastern and western Georgia until 8 a.m. EDT Sunday, Oct. 11.
The affected areas include metro Atlanta, Macon, Athens, Gainesville, Rome, Dalton, Cartersville, Marietta, Lawrenceville, Douglasville, Warner Robins, Dublin and numerous surrounding communities.
Forecasters report that western Georgia has already received an estimated 1 to 4 inches of rainfall, with lesser amounts farther east.
Additional rainfall totals of 1 to 4 inches are expected across the affected region, while localized storm totals could reach 8 inches before the event ends.
Bands of moderate to heavy rain are expected to continue through Saturday night. Eastern Georgia could experience additional heavy rainfall bands, while more persistent rainfall affects northern portions of the state.
The Weather Service warns that repeated thunderstorms moving over the same locations could produce rapid flooding, particularly in urban areas, neighborhoods with poor drainage and locations near rivers or streams.
Flooding could also affect low water crossings, rural roads and other flood prone locations.
Drivers traveling through the Atlanta metropolitan area and across northern and central Georgia should remain alert for standing water and rapidly changing road conditions.
Residents in flood prone communities should prepare to act quickly if Flood Warnings are issued.
A Flood Watch means flooding is possible, not that flooding is occurring everywhere within the watch area.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and avoid driving through flooded roadways as the heavy rainfall threat continues into Sunday morning.
