Atlanta, GA – Georgia residents are facing a dramatic weather change this week as near record October warmth pushes temperatures toward 90 degrees before a strong cold front brings much cooler, fall like conditions this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, temperatures across north and central Georgia will run approximately 10 to 15 degrees above average through Friday, October 16, with abundant sunshine and virtually no chance of rain.
Wednesday and Thursday, October 14 15, are expected to bring the warmest conditions, with several communities approaching record high temperatures.
Atlanta is forecast to reach 87 degrees both days, while Athens could climb to 89 Thursday.
Farther south, Columbus and Macon are expected to reach around 90 degrees, making mid October feel more like late summer.
A strong cold front is expected to move across the region late Friday into Saturday, October 17, bringing a sharp temperature drop.
By Saturday afternoon, Atlanta's forecast high falls to 68 degrees, nearly 20 degrees cooler than Thursday.
Athens and Rome are also expected to reach just 68 degrees Saturday, while Columbus and Macon cool into the middle 70s.
The cooldown becomes even more noticeable overnight.
By Sunday morning, October 18, temperatures could fall to 49 degrees in Atlanta, 47 in Athens and 45 in Rome.
The weather service expects temperatures to return to near or slightly below seasonal averages behind the front.
Despite the significant temperature change, widespread rainfall is not expected during the warm stretch leading up to Friday.
Residents planning outdoor activities should prepare for the contrast between the unusually warm weekdays and cooler weekend conditions.
Drivers can generally expect dry travel conditions through Friday, although motorists should remain alert for updated forecasts as the cold front approaches.
The cooler pattern is expected to continue into Monday, October 19, with highs generally in the 70s.
