Tavares, FL – A troubling set of Florida traffic statistics is drawing renewed attention during National Teen Driver Safety Week, with authorities highlighting 190 deaths connected to crashes involving teenage drivers across the state in 2024.
According to the Lake County Sheriff 's Office, 42,204 Florida drivers ages 15 to 19 were involved in crashes during 2024, resulting in fatalities and thousands of injuries among drivers, passengers and other road users.
The figures were shared as part of National Teen Driver Safety Week, observed Oct. 18 24, 2026, to encourage safer driving habits among teenagers and greater involvement from parents and guardians.
Of the 190 people killed in crashes involving teen drivers, 100 were teenage drivers themselves.
The statewide figures also included 538 incapacitating injuries and 10,333 other teen driver injuries, according to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles data highlighted by the sheriff's office.
The statistics underscore the consequences that traffic collisions can have on young motorists, their passengers and other people sharing Florida's roadways.
For families in Lake County and throughout Central Florida, the campaign emphasizes the importance of discussing safe driving habits before teenagers get behind the wheel.
Authorities are encouraging parents and guardians to remind young drivers to wear seat belts, avoid cellphone distractions, obey posted speed limits and remain alert to surrounding traffic.
The sheriff's office emphasized that even one responsible decision can change the outcome of a potentially dangerous situation.
National Teen Driver Safety Week provides an opportunity for families to revisit driving expectations, discuss common roadway hazards and reinforce responsible behavior.
The statistics reflect statewide crashes during 2024, not incidents reported during the current safety campaign.
As the awareness week continues through Saturday, Oct. 24, officials are urging Florida families to make teen driving safety an ongoing conversation rather than a once a year reminder.
The sheriff's office summed up its message with a simple reminder: One safe choice can change the outcome.
