Tampa, FL – A cold front moving across the Tampa Bay area Saturday, October 17, is bringing widespread rain chances, scattered thunderstorms and increasingly dangerous marine conditions. Gulf waters could experience waves reaching 13 feet as strong northeast winds develop behind the front, creating hazardous conditions for boaters through early Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout Saturday, with rain chances ranging from 50% to 80% across west central and southwest Florida.
Mostly cloudy skies will accompany the frontal passage, with afternoon temperatures ranging from 74 to 83 degrees.
Drivers should prepare for wet roadways and reduced visibility during heavier showers, particularly along busy routes including Interstate 275, Interstate 75 and Interstate 4.
Small Craft Advisory Through Tuesday Morning
The National Weather Service has issued a Small Craft Advisory for coastal waters along west central and southwest Florida from 8 a.m. Saturday through 3 a.m. Tuesday, October 20.
Northeast winds around 20 to 30 knots are expected, with offshore seas potentially building to 9 to 13 feet.
These conditions could make boating dangerous, especially for inexperienced mariners and operators of smaller vessels.
Boaters are encouraged to avoid hazardous waters and monitor updated marine forecasts before departing.
Sunday Brings Sunshine, Cooler Temperatures
By Sunday, October 18, the front will move away from the region, allowing mostly sunny skies and significantly drier conditions to return.
Rain chances fall to near zero, with daytime temperatures ranging from 73 to 82 degrees and overnight lows between 55 and 68 degrees.
Breezy north northeast winds will continue despite improving inland weather.
October 22–26 Extended Weather Outlook
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center indicates that temperatures across much of Florida are favored to remain near seasonal averages during October 22–26, with portions of the state showing increased chances for above normal temperatures.
The precipitation outlook suggests near normal rainfall probabilities across much of the Florida Peninsula, although localized showers remain possible.
While inland weather improves Sunday, dangerous Gulf conditions remain the immediate concern for coastal communities and boaters into early next week.
