Tampa, FL – A 41 year old man faces five child neglect charges after deputies say a 3 year old child was found wandering barefoot and alone near a busy Tampa roadway Thursday night.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Office, deputies responded around 8:38 p.m. Thursday to North 42nd Street near Hellenic Drive after a witness reported finding the young child alone.
Deputies located the child’s residence and allegedly discovered the front door open. Inside, authorities said they found four additional young children without a parent or caregiver present.
The sheriff’s office said deputies also allegedly found a stove turned on and smoking. Authorities reported that the youngest children were wearing soiled diapers.
During the investigation, deputies learned the children’s mother was at work and had allegedly left the five children in the care of their father, identified by authorities as 41 year old Glenn Jones.
Jones later returned to the residence and was arrested, according to the sheriff’s office. He was charged with five counts of child neglect.
Authorities did not provide additional information in Saturday’s announcement about the ages of the other four children or whether any of them required medical treatment.
The sheriff’s office also did not disclose how long investigators believe the children had been without supervision or how far the 3 year old had wandered before being found.
The allegations remain subject to the court process. Jones is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
