Tallahassee, FL – Florida residents wondering whether snow could return during the 2026 27 winter season have decades of unusual weather history to consider. While measurable snowfall remains exceptionally rare across much of the Sunshine State, past winter outbreaks have brought snow, flurries and dangerous freezing temperatures to areas better known for warm weather.
According to historical winter weather information provided for this report, Florida does not have a reliable statewide date for its first measurable snowfall. However, unusual events in December 1989 and January 1977 demonstrate that snow can occur under exceptional atmospheric conditions.
When Does Florida Usually See Its First Snow? Unlike northern states, Florida does not experience measurable snowfall during a typical winter.
Northern Florida, including Tallahassee and surrounding Panhandle communities, generally has a greater opportunity for freezing temperatures and rare winter precipitation than central and southern areas.
Farther south, snowfall becomes increasingly unusual.
In January 1977, flurries were reported as far south as Miami during an extraordinary cold outbreak.
Another historic event occurred in December 1989, when a powerful Arctic outbreak brought freezing temperatures and unusual holiday snowfall to parts of Florida.
Could Florida See Snow or Freezing Temperatures This Winter? Although snow is rare, freezing temperatures remain an important winter weather concern, particularly across northern and interior Florida.
Cold outbreaks can threaten crops, exposed plumbing and outdoor vegetation. Frost and freezing conditions can also affect early morning travel.
The possibility of snowfall depends on an unusual combination of sufficiently cold air and available moisture.
Historical events do not establish whether snow will occur during the upcoming winter.
Residents across Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Gainesville, Orlando and South Florida should monitor National Weather Service forecasts when strong cold fronts approach.
For now, Florida's winter weather history offers a reminder that snow is uncommon, but significant cold outbreaks can still affect the state.
