Tallahassee, FL – Tropical Storm Isaias is strengthening in the Gulf, and parts of the Florida Panhandle could face several days of heavy rain, flooding and tornadoes beginning Friday as the system approaches the Gulf Coast.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Tropical Depression 9 officially strengthened into Tropical Storm Isaias with the 5 a.m. EDT advisory Wednesday. Its forecast track shifted slightly east, with Isaias expected to approach major hurricane strength before nearing the Gulf Coast Friday.
Forecasters said increasing westerly wind shear near landfall could make the storm's impacts uneven. Areas east of Isaias' center could experience stronger winds, heavier rainfall and a greater tornado threat.
Heavy rain is expected to begin Friday and continue into Sunday. Widespread totals of 2 to 5 inches are forecast across the Florida Panhandle and southeastern Alabama, while localized amounts of 7 to 10 inches are possible.
Lower rainfall totals are currently expected farther east across Florida's Big Bend and southern Georgia.
A tornado threat is also expected to develop Friday and continue into Saturday, particularly along and east of the storm's center. The National Weather Service warned that the threat includes the possibility of overnight tornadoes Friday night into Saturday.
Residents across Tallahassee, Leon County, the Florida Panhandle and surrounding Gulf Coast communities should closely monitor changes in Isaias' track and local warnings.
Forecasters are encouraging residents to double check emergency kits and remain prepared as conditions evolve. The storm's exact path will determine where the most significant rain, wind and tornado impacts occur.
