Tallahassee, FL – A Flood Watch is in effect for portions of the Florida Panhandle as repeated rounds of heavy rain could cause flash flooding through early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, the watch runs from 10 a.m. CDT Saturday through 7 a.m. CDT Monday for parts of the Panhandle, including areas around Panama City and along the coast.
The NWS expects rainfall totals generally between 3 and 6 inches within the watch area. Localized totals of 8 to 10 inches are possible along the Florida Panhandle coast, though forecasters put the chance of exceeding those higher end amounts at about 10%.
The Weather Prediction Center outlook shown by the NWS places parts of the region under a Slight Risk, level 2 of 4, for excessive rainfall. That category represents at least a 15% chance of rainfall exceeding flash flood guidance within 25 miles of a point.
Repeated rounds of heavy rain through Monday could produce flash flooding, particularly in low lying locations and areas with poor drainage. The Flood Watch means flooding is possible and does not indicate that flooding is occurring everywhere in the watch area.
Outside the watch area, the Tallahassee NWS office forecasts generally 2 to 5 inches of rain over the next few days.
Residents and travelers should monitor updated forecasts and any subsequent flood warnings through the weekend. The NWS advises drivers not to enter flooded roads and to “turn around, don’t drown.”
