Tallahassee, FL – A sharp weather change is approaching Florida's Gulf Coast this weekend, with a strong cold front expected to bring cooler temperatures and potentially hazardous marine conditions beginning Friday night, Oct. 16, and continuing through Monday, Oct. 19.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, warm and dry weather will dominate much of the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend through Friday before a dry cold front moves through the region, bringing a significant increase in offshore winds.
Gale Force Gusts Possible This Weekend
Forecasters warn that offshore winds across the northeastern Gulf could increase sharply Friday night into Saturday, Oct. 17.
Sustained offshore winds are projected to reach approximately 22 to 28 knots during the weekend, with gale force gusts possible.
These conditions are expected to create hazardous boating conditions, particularly for smaller vessels operating offshore.
The Weather Service indicates that conditions favorable for boating through Friday could deteriorate rapidly as the front moves through.
Small Craft Advisory level conditions are expected, although the supplied forecast does not confirm an advisory has already been issued.
Temperatures Drop 10 to 15 Degrees
On land, afternoon temperatures will remain above normal through Friday, with highs generally reaching the middle to upper 80s.
Tallahassee is forecast to reach 88 degrees Tuesday through Thursday before cooling to 86 Friday.
By Saturday, temperatures in Tallahassee could fall to approximately 76 degrees, with Sunday's high near 75.
Panama City is expected to drop from 86 degrees Friday to 77 Saturday, while Apalachicola cools from 82 to 77 degrees.
Overnight lows across much of the region are expected to settle mainly into the 50s.
Dry Weather Continues Through Monday
Despite the approaching cold front, the Weather Service expects dry conditions through Monday, Oct. 19.
Residents can anticipate cooler afternoons and more comfortable overnight temperatures, while boaters should closely monitor changing marine forecasts.
Anyone planning offshore activities this weekend should check the latest National Weather Service marine advisories before departure.
