RIVERVIEW, FL — A Florida teenager allegedly tried to make her ex boyfriend look responsible for a school shooting threat, using an AI altered Instagram post that ultimately led investigators straight back to her.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff 's Office, the investigation began Wednesday, October 14, when administrators at Riverview High School received an email containing a screenshot of an Instagram post threatening a shooting at the school.
The post appeared to have come from a male student who attended Riverview High, immediately putting him at the center of the investigation.
But detectives soon discovered something wasn't adding up.
After interviewing the boy, investigators determined he hadn't made the threatening post. Instead, the evidence pointed to his former girlfriend, a 15 year old who previously attended the same school.
Authorities say the girl used artificial intelligence to alter the screenshot, making it appear that her ex boyfriend had posted the threat.
When detectives contacted her, she allegedly admitted sending the email and acknowledged knowing the image had been manipulated using AI.
What began as an investigation into a possible school shooting threat had now turned into a case involving an alleged attempt to frame another student.
The teenager was arrested and charged with making a written or electronic threat to conduct a mass shooting or act of terrorism, unlawful use of a two way communications device and disrupting a school campus or function.
Investigators haven't said what prompted the alleged attempt to implicate her ex boyfriend or whether a personal dispute played a role.
The sheriff's office also hasn't reported any actual shooting connected to the incident.
The case highlights how manipulated social media content can quickly lead to serious consequences, particularly when threats involving schools are involved.
The teenager now faces criminal charges, while the boy initially linked to the threatening post was determined by investigators not to be its source.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
