Pensacola, FL – Hurricane Isaias is strengthening over the Gulf of Mexico Thursday morning, with potentially dangerous conditions expected along the northern Gulf Coast beginning Friday and spreading inland through Saturday.
According to the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service updates issued early Thursday, Isaias became a Category 1 hurricane overnight, producing sustained winds near 80 mph. Additional strengthening is forecast before the storm approaches the northern Gulf Coast late Friday into early Saturday.
The greatest immediate threats include damaging winds, coastal flooding, dangerous storm surge, heavy rainfall and tornadoes.
Friday morning through afternoon: Conditions are expected to deteriorate across portions of the Florida Panhandle and nearby Gulf Coast communities. Tropical storm force winds could begin arriving Friday afternoon, with residents urged to complete preparations by Friday morning.
Friday evening into early Saturday: The hurricane is forecast to approach or make landfall along the northern Gulf Coast. Portions of the Florida Panhandle could experience storm surge reaching 5 to 7 feet above ground level, while repeated downpours increase the threat of flash flooding.
Saturday into Sunday: As Isaias moves inland and weakens, heavy rainfall and gusty winds could spread into Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee.
The National Weather Service forecasts 3 to 7 inches of rain across portions of the Florida Panhandle and surrounding areas, with isolated totals potentially reaching 10 inches.
Meanwhile, the Storm Prediction Center highlights a tornado threat Friday night into Saturday, particularly across the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama and southwestern Georgia.
Farther inland, portions of Tennessee could receive 1 to 3 inches of rainfall, with wind gusts approaching 35 to 40 mph.
Residents throughout the region should monitor changing forecasts, secure outdoor belongings and avoid unnecessary travel during hazardous conditions.
