Orlando, FL – Orange County authorities are urging residents experiencing domestic abuse, or those concerned about someone they know, to seek available support as communities recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month throughout October.
According to the Orange County Sheriff 's Office, help is available around the clock through local and national organizations. The agency shared the message Wednesday as part of an effort to raise awareness about domestic violence and encourage people to recognize different forms of abuse.
Officials highlighted Harbor House of Central Florida as a local resource offering 24 hour assistance, safety services and support to people affected by domestic violence.
The Sheriff's Office also emphasized that domestic abuse is not limited to physical violence. It can include emotional abuse, such as intimidation, humiliation or persistent criticism, as well as financial abuse involving control of money and other resources.
Sexual activity without consent is another form of abuse. Psychological abuse can include actions intended to create extreme fear or distress, according to information shared by the agency.
The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available at 800 799 7233 , while online chat assistance is available through thehotline.org .
Authorities are encouraging residents to take warning signs seriously and to share support information with friends or relatives who may need assistance.
For someone facing immediate danger, calling 911 remains the fastest way to request emergency law enforcement or medical assistance.
October is recognized nationally as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, with agencies and advocacy organizations using the observance to highlight resources, prevention efforts and services available to survivors.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office summed up its message by encouraging people to break the silence and help break the cycle of abuse.
