Miami, FL – Dangerous ocean conditions are threatening South Florida beaches Tuesday, October 20, with powerful rip currents, elevated surf and hazardous boating conditions affecting coastal communities from Palm Beach County through Broward and Miami Dade counties. The high rip current risk is expected to continue through at least Thursday, October 22.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, a high risk of rip currents remains in effect for all Atlantic beaches across South Florida, while a High Surf Advisory continues for Palm Beach and Broward County beaches through at least Tuesday evening.
Strong rip currents and increasing wave heights could create life threatening swimming conditions , particularly along exposed Atlantic beaches.
Coastal communities including West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Miami Beach face hazardous surf conditions, although the High Surf Advisory specifically covers Palm Beach and Broward counties.
Forecasters warn that powerful currents can quickly carry swimmers away from shore, even when ocean conditions appear manageable from the beach.
Boating conditions are also expected to remain dangerous.
A Small Craft Advisory covers all local waters, with sustained winds of 20 to 25 knots.
Across Atlantic waters, seas could reach 8 to 12 feet, creating hazardous conditions for smaller vessels.
Gulf waters are also affected, with seas ranging from 3 to 6 feet and similarly strong winds.
The Weather Service warns that hazardous waves and strong currents could make marine activities particularly dangerous for inexperienced boaters.
Beachgoers are strongly encouraged to avoid entering the ocean while the high rip current risk remains in effect.
Residents and visitors should follow instructions from lifeguards, beach patrols and local officials.
Although the High Surf Advisory for Palm Beach and Broward counties currently extends through at least Tuesday evening, the elevated rip current threat is expected to persist through Thursday.
