Miami, FL — Residents and visitors along South Florida's Atlantic coastline are being warned of possible moderate coastal flooding through at least Saturday, Oct. 24, as elevated tides threaten low lying coastal areas. Dangerous rip currents, rough surf and hazardous boating conditions are also expected to persist into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect along portions of the southeastern Florida coastline, including coastal areas near Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.
The greatest flooding concerns are expected during and around high tide, when rising water levels could affect vulnerable coastal roads and other low lying locations.
Forecasters identified several important high tide windows, including 5:30 to 7 a.m. Thursday, 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday and 6 to 7:30 a.m. Friday.
Additional coastal flooding remains possible during subsequent high tide cycles through at least Saturday.
Officials strongly discourage motorists from driving through saltwater flooding, which can damage vehicles and conceal roadway hazards.
Beachgoers also face dangerous conditions.
The National Weather Service has issued a high rip current risk for Atlantic beaches through at least the weekend. Rip currents can quickly carry swimmers away from shore, even when ocean conditions appear manageable.
A High Surf Advisory is also in effect for Palm Beach through at least Friday evening, with elevated waves creating additional hazards near the shoreline.
Meanwhile, a Small Craft Advisory highlights dangerous marine conditions across Atlantic waters through the remainder of the week.
Boaters, swimmers and coastal residents should monitor changing conditions and follow instructions from local officials and beach safety personnel.
Anyone planning beach activities this weekend should check local surf conditions and avoid entering the water where dangerous rip currents are present.
