Melbourne, FL – A high risk of rip currents is in effect at all east central Florida Atlantic beaches Saturday as scattered showers and storms develop and heat index values approach 100 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, numerous strong, life threatening rip currents are expected along the Daytona, Space and Treasure coasts. Surf of 3 to 4 feet is forecast.
The NWS advises beachgoers to stay out of the ocean and follow instructions from lifeguards and local beach patrols. The high risk area stretches from around Daytona Beach south through Brevard County and the Treasure Coast.
Away from the surf, coastal showers and a few thunderstorms are forecast Saturday morning, primarily south of Cape Canaveral. Rain chances will shift toward the far interior during the afternoon and evening.
Rain probabilities reach 60% in Leesburg and 50% in Orlando, Sanford, Kissimmee and Okeechobee. Daytona Beach, Melbourne, Vero Beach, Port St. Lucie and Stuart have a 40% chance.
Thunderstorms could produce lightning and locally heavy rainfall.
Warm, humid conditions will continue across the region. Forecast highs range from 86 degrees at Daytona Beach to 89 in Kissimmee, Vero Beach and Okeechobee. Orlando and Melbourne are forecast to reach 88.
Despite those upper 80s temperatures, humidity could push peak heat index values to around 100 degrees.
Residents and visitors should monitor changing storm conditions Saturday, while anyone heading to the Atlantic beaches should account for the high rip current risk and follow local beach safety guidance.
