MACCLENNY, FL – A Flood Warning remains in effect along the St. Marys River near Macclenny, where minor flooding is already occurring and river levels are expected to continue rising through Saturday evening, Oct. 10.
According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, the warning affects Baker and Nassau counties in northeast Florida and Charlton County in southeast Georgia. The warning remains in effect until further notice.
As of 8:45 p.m. EDT Friday, the St. Marys River at Macclenny stood at 12.4 feet, exceeding its official flood stage of 12 feet.
Forecasters expect the river to continue rising before reaching a crest of 12.7 feet Saturday evening.
At 12 feet, minor flooding affects low lying areas and timberlands along the river, including some properties near St. Marys River Bluff Road and Cypress Landing Resort on the Georgia side.
The National Weather Service also identifies more significant access problems at higher river levels. At 14 feet, flooding affects bottomlands and lower access roads, including the lower half of St. Marys River Bluff Road, potentially cutting off access to 15 to 20 homes on the Georgia side.
However, the currently forecast crest of 12.7 feet remains below that 14 foot impact threshold.
The warning covers communities and properties near the river along the Florida Georgia border, where low lying land can remain affected while river levels stay above flood stage.
Residents near the St. Marys River should monitor water levels and avoid traveling through flooded roads. Motorists should never attempt to cross roadways covered by floodwater.
Although the river is expected to crest Saturday evening, the National Weather Service has not provided a specific time for water levels to fall below flood stage.
The next official flood statement is scheduled for 9 p.m. EDT Saturday, Oct. 10. Until then, minor flooding is expected to continue along vulnerable portions of the St. Marys River near Macclenny.
