Lee County, FL – A 9 day old baby remains hospitalized in critical condition after allegedly being violently shaken, prompting a child abuse investigation and the arrest of a man in Southwest Florida. Authorities announced the arrest Monday, raising serious concerns over the injuries suffered by the newborn.
According to the Lee County Sheriff 's Office, deputies responded Saturday, Oct. 31, to a local children's hospital after receiving a report of possible child abuse involving the infant.
When deputies arrived, they learned the newborn had been brought to the hospital experiencing severe breathing difficulties and was partially unresponsive.
Due to the seriousness of the baby's condition, detectives assigned to the Sheriff's Office Special Victims Unit took over the investigation.
Medical personnel subsequently determined the infant had suffered significant trauma consistent with being violently shaken, according to investigators.
Following an extensive investigation, detectives established probable cause to arrest Noah Lils Alcantara on a charge of aggravated child abuse.
The Sheriff's Office has not publicly detailed the circumstances surrounding the alleged shaking or specified the relationship between Alcantara and the infant in its announcement.
The newborn remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition , authorities confirmed.
Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno condemned the alleged abuse and praised investigators for their response.
"There is no excuse for what this man did to a nine day old infant," Marceno said in the department's statement.
The sheriff also emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable children and credited Special Victims Unit detectives for their investigative work.
The case highlights the potentially devastating consequences of abusive head trauma in infants, which can cause life threatening injuries.
Authorities have not announced additional charges or provided a timeline for the infant's recovery.
Alcantara is accused of aggravated child abuse. The charge remains an allegation, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
