Lake City, FL – A motorcyclist was arrested in Columbia County after deputies said he allegedly fled several attempted traffic stops, reaching speeds above 120 mph on Interstate 75 before officers eventually boxed in the motorcycle.
According to the Columbia County Sheriff ’s Office , a deputy attempted to stop the motorcycle Wednesday using emergency lights and a siren, but the rider allegedly fled south on I 75 at speeds exceeding 120 mph. The deputy ended the pursuit after losing sight of the motorcycle because of its speed.
Authorities said a sheriff’s sergeant later spotted the same motorcycle on State Road 47 near Clay Electric. The motorcycle allegedly accelerated and left the area before another traffic stop could be completed.
A separate deputy later located the motorcycle traveling east on Southeast Baya Drive and south on Southeast Country Club Road. The sheriff’s office said radar showed the motorcycle reaching 116 mph before it continued toward County Road 133C and U.S. 41.
Deputies coordinated their patrol vehicles and successfully boxed in the motorcycle, according to the agency. The driver was identified as 32 year old Darrell Denver Horne . He was taken into custody without further incident.
Sheriff’s officials said deputies allegedly found a methamphetamine pipe inside a backpack Horne was wearing. Authorities also said Horne was on probation out of Sarasota County and classified as a habitual traffic offender.
Horne was booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility without bond at his first appearance. Listed charges include aggravated fleeing and eluding, habitual driving while license suspended or revoked, dangerous excessive speeding, reckless driving, possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of probation.
The charges are allegations, and Horne is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
