Jacksonville, FL – Three words in a winter weather warning could signal an exceptionally dangerous storm, even in a state where snow and ice are uncommon. For Florida residents, the wording would be highly unusual, but it is worth understanding before the 2026 27 winter season.
According to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, the National Weather Service is expanding the use of "Particularly Dangerous Situation," or PDS, wording in select Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings this winter.
The wording is intended for rare, exceptionally dangerous events that could threaten lives, transportation and essential infrastructure.
What Are the Three Words Florida Residents Should Know?
"Particularly Dangerous Situation" highlights an extraordinary threat within an existing weather warning.
In a Blizzard Warning, it would emphasize exceptionally dangerous wind and visibility conditions. In an Ice Storm Warning, it could highlight extreme damage risks from accumulating ice.
Could This Happen in Florida?
Florida is far less likely to experience conditions requiring this terminology than states farther north.
However, the Panhandle and North Florida occasionally experience freezing rain, sleet and other winter precipitation.
During an exceptional ice storm, Interstate 10 across the Panhandle, Interstate 75 near Gainesville and Interstate 95 around Jacksonville could become hazardous.
Ice accumulation could also damage trees and power lines, creating outages during unusually cold weather.
Central and South Florida face much lower risks from these specific winter hazards.
These are hypothetical impacts, not predictions of an approaching storm.
Is PDS a New Winter Weather Warning?
No. PDS is additional wording within certain existing Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings, not a separate warning category.
A freeze warning or cold weather advisory does not automatically qualify for PDS wording.
What Should Florida Residents Do?
If PDS wording ever appears in an official local warning, residents should avoid unnecessary travel, follow emergency instructions and prepare for serious disruptions.
The expanded terminology does not mean a catastrophic winter storm is forecast for Florida.
