JACKSONVILLE, FL – Northeast Florida beaches face a hazardous Halloween weekend as waves reaching 6 to 8 feet, dangerous rip currents and minor coastal flooding threaten shoreline areas around Jacksonville through Sunday evening.
The coastal hazards arrive alongside increasing rain chances, with showers becoming likely Sunday and Monday. Residents and visitors heading toward the beaches should prepare for rough surf, potentially flooded coastal roads and hazardous swimming conditions.
Coastal Flooding and 8 Foot Surf Threaten Jacksonville Beaches According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 5 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, for northeast Florida beaches, including coastal Duval, Nassau, Flagler and St. Johns counties.
Minor coastal flooding could affect lots, parks and roads, with isolated road closures possible. Localized beach erosion is also expected.
A High Rip Current Risk remains in effect through Sunday evening, while a High Surf Advisory begins at 5 p.m. Saturday and continues until 7 p.m. Sunday.
Large breaking waves of 6 to 8 feet are expected along northeast Florida beaches.
The Weather Service warns that dangerous swimming and surfing conditions could sweep even experienced swimmers away from shore and into deeper water.
Motorists encountering flooded coastal roads should avoid driving through standing water, particularly where water depth is unknown.
Rain Chances Climb to 70% as November Begins Jacksonville's immediate forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies Saturday, with a high near 79 degrees and a 30% chance of afternoon showers. East winds could gust as high as 28 mph.
Sunday brings a 60% chance of showers, mainly after 3 p.m., with a high near 77 degrees. Wind gusts could reach 25 mph.
Rain chances increase to 70% Sunday night and remain at 70% Monday, when showers and possibly a thunderstorm are expected.
The unsettled weather gradually eases Tuesday, with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms and a high near 78 degrees.
Thanksgiving Holiday Travel: Rain or Snow Outlook? Looking farther ahead, NOAA's Climate Prediction Center favors above normal temperatures across Florida during Nov. 5 9 and Nov. 7 13.
Precipitation probabilities are less consistent. The Nov. 5 9 outlook shows no clear precipitation preference around Jacksonville, while the Nov. 7 13 outlook favors below normal precipitation across much of northern Florida.
By Nov. 14 27, NOAA favors above normal precipitation across Florida, including Jacksonville. That period includes Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26, and the surrounding holiday travel window.
The extended outlook does not identify a Thanksgiving storm or predict rainfall amounts. With warmer than normal temperatures favored earlier in November and no clear late month temperature preference across Florida, there is no reliable indication of Thanksgiving snow in Jacksonville.
For now, the immediate concern remains the hazardous surf and coastal flooding through Sunday, followed by increased shower chances early next week.
