Miami, FL — Hurricane Vance has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane over the eastern Pacific Ocean early Friday, with sustained winds reaching 85 mph and forecasters warning that rapid intensification could continue throughout the day.
According to the National Hurricane Center's 3 a.m. Central time advisory Friday, Oct. 23, the storm was centered approximately 440 miles south southwest of Acapulco, Mexico, near latitude 10.9 degrees north and longitude 102.1 degrees west.
Vance was moving north northwest at approximately 6 mph, a general motion forecasters expect to continue through the weekend.
The hurricane's maximum sustained winds were estimated at 85 mph, with higher gusts possible.
Rapid strengthening remains a major concern, as favorable conditions could allow the system to become considerably stronger over the coming days.
The National Hurricane Center's forecast graphic shows Vance potentially reaching major hurricane strength Saturday before continuing northward over the eastern Pacific.
Although the storm remains offshore, its growing circulation is expected to generate hazardous ocean conditions along portions of Mexico's Pacific coastline.
Swells produced by Vance could begin reaching southern and southwestern Mexico this weekend and persist into next week.
These conditions may create life threatening surf and rip currents, particularly for swimmers, surfers and beachgoers.
Coastal residents and visitors are encouraged to monitor local weather advisories as the storm develops.
The hurricane center's forecast cone indicates a general northward track through early next week, but officials emphasize that hazardous conditions can occur well outside the projected path of the storm's center.
The forecast remains subject to change as Vance strengthens and moves closer to the region.
The next complete National Hurricane Center advisory is scheduled for 9 a.m. Central time Friday.
Residents and travelers along Mexico's Pacific coast should continue monitoring official updates at Hurricanes.gov .
