Century, FL – A Hurricane Watch is in effect for inland Escambia County as Isaias could bring strong tropical storm force winds and major flooding beginning Friday, Oct. 9.
According to the National Weather Service in Mobile, the watch includes Century, Walnut Hill and Molino. A Hurricane Watch means hurricane force winds are possible somewhere within the watch area within 48 hours.
The latest local forecast calls for sustained winds of 45 to 60 mph with gusts reaching 90 mph. Tropical storm force winds are expected from Friday afternoon into early Saturday morning.
The NWS says preparations to protect life and property should be completed before winds become hazardous. Potential wind impacts include damage to roofing and siding, snapped or uprooted trees, blocked roads and scattered power and communications outages.
Heavy rainfall is also a significant concern. Forecasters expect 6 to 10 inches, with locally higher amounts possible, and assess the area as having the potential for major flooding.
Major rainfall flooding could cause rivers and tributaries to overflow in multiple locations and send smaller streams, creeks, canals and ditches rapidly out of their banks. Floodwater could enter structures, cover escape routes and force road or bridge closures. The NWS says evacuations and rescues may be needed where the worst flooding develops.
No storm surge inundation is forecast for inland Escambia County. Tornadoes are also not expected under the current forecast, although showers and thunderstorms could still produce gusty winds.
Residents should continue monitoring NWS Mobile and Escambia County emergency officials. Tropical storm force winds are expected to become possible Friday afternoon and continue into early Saturday morning, while rainfall and wind projections could change as Isaias approaches.
