Washington, DC – A dramatic weather shift is heading toward the Eastern United States this weekend, with some communities expected to experience temperature drops exceeding 30 degrees as unusually warm October conditions give way to a much cooler fall pattern.
According to the National Weather Service, record breaking warmth Wednesday, Oct. 14, will be followed by significantly cooler conditions across portions of the eastern U.S. by Saturday, Oct. 17.
The agency described the approaching change as "weather whiplash," highlighting the sharp contrast between the current warmth and the forecast weekend temperatures.
National Weather Service temperature maps show widespread warmth across the eastern states Wednesday, with forecast highs reaching the 70s and 80s in numerous locations.
By Saturday, the forecast shifts considerably.
Large portions of the Northeast, Mid Atlantic and surrounding eastern states are projected to experience highs in the 40s, 50s and 60s, depending on location.
Some areas could see afternoon temperatures more than 30 degrees below Wednesday's readings.
The cooler pattern could be especially noticeable for residents who have recently experienced temperatures more typical of late summer than mid October.
For people planning outdoor activities, sporting events or weekend travel, the change means jackets and additional layers may be necessary, particularly in northern and inland communities.
However, the temperature drop will not be uniform. Some locations will experience more modest cooling, while others could see much larger changes.
The National Weather Service has not indicated in the provided announcement that the temperature shift alone will create widespread hazardous travel conditions.
Residents should monitor local forecasts as the weekend approaches, particularly for updated temperatures and any additional weather advisories.
