WILMINGTON, DE – A sharp temperature drop is expected across northern Delaware this weekend, with Wilmington temperatures falling from a forecast high of 82 degrees Wednesday to the middle 50s Saturday as a colder weather pattern develops across the eastern United States Oct. 17 21.
According to the National Weather Service, Wilmington could reach 82 degrees Wednesday before cooler air arrives later in the week. Saturday's forecast high is near 55 degrees, representing a 27 degree decline in daytime temperatures.
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center also favors below normal temperatures across northern Delaware during Oct. 17 21, part of a broader pattern extending from the Great Lakes into the Northeast and Mid Atlantic.
The cooldown follows several days of warm October weather.
Tuesday is expected to bring sunshine and a high near 79 degrees, followed by another sunny day Wednesday with temperatures reaching 82. Thursday remains relatively mild, with a high near 71 degrees.
A chance of showers develops Thursday night, with a 40% probability of precipitation. Friday brings another 50% chance of showers and a high near 75 degrees before temperatures begin falling more noticeably.
By Saturday, mostly sunny skies are expected, but temperatures may reach only 55 degrees. Saturday night could bring a low around 39 degrees, introducing some of the chilliest conditions in the forecast period.
While colder air may support early season wintry precipitation farther north across the Appalachians and Northeast, the current Wilmington forecast does not include snow.
NOAA's precipitation outlook favors below normal precipitation across Delaware Oct. 17 21, indicating the colder pattern does not necessarily mean widespread rainfall.
For Wilmington residents, the immediate change will be the transition from Wednesday's 82 degree warmth to weekend highs in the 50s and overnight temperatures near 39 degrees. Below normal temperatures remain favored through Oct. 21, although exact daily conditions beyond the weekend remain uncertain.
