Felton, DE – A Bridgeville man is in custody following a violent incident late Thursday night. On September 17, 2026, at approximately 11:40 p.m., Delaware State Police troopers responded to the 500 block of Black Swamp Road in Felton after receiving a report of an assault. Investigators determined that 55 year old John Baker, described as intoxicated, had entered a barn on the property and engaged in a verbal dispute with a victim.
The situation escalated when Baker reportedly began physically assaulting the individual. During the altercation, Baker allegedly brandished a handgun and pointed it at the victim. When a second victim entered the area, Baker pointed the firearm at him as well. As Baker fled the property, he reportedly fired a single shot into the air. Neither victim sustained physical injuries.
The Delaware State Police Criminal Investigations Unit recovered a spent shell casing at the scene. On September 18, 2026, Baker called 9 1 1 to report his location at a gas station in the 11000 block of South Dupont Highway in Felton. Troopers arrived and took him into custody without incident. Detectives subsequently recovered the firearm, which Baker had reportedly given to a friend.
Baker was taken to Troop 3, where he was charged with multiple offenses, arraigned by the Justice of the Peace Court, and committed to the Department of Correction on a $116,600 cash bond.
