Dover, DE – Delaware and surrounding communities face multiple weather threats Sunday, October 11, as heavy rainfall, isolated severe thunderstorms and coastal flooding create the potential for hazardous travel and localized flooding through tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Philadelphia/Mount Holly, the remnants of Isaias are bringing widespread rain across the region, with moderate to locally heavy rainfall expected throughout Sunday and Sunday night.
Forecasters predict rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches, with localized amounts reaching 3 inches in some areas.
The heaviest downpours could produce flash flooding, particularly in urban communities, low lying locations and areas with poor drainage.
The National Weather Service has identified a marginal risk for excessive rainfall across portions of Delaware, southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.
Meanwhile, isolated severe thunderstorms are possible Sunday afternoon and evening, with the greatest severe storm risk generally south of the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
Damaging wind gusts are the primary severe weather concern, although forecasters say a weak tornado cannot be completely ruled out.
Coastal flooding is another concern, especially along Delaware Bay.
A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect for Kent County, Delaware, until 1 p.m. Sunday, with minor tidal flooding possible in vulnerable coastal communities and roadways.
Additional minor coastal flooding could occur during high tide cycles Sunday and Monday, October 12.
Drivers should avoid flooded roadways and remain alert for ponding water, reduced visibility and changing travel conditions.
Although forecasters have not indicated that area rivers are expected to reach flood stage, localized roadway and drainage flooding remains possible.
Residents across Dover, Wilmington, Philadelphia and surrounding communities should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts and any additional warnings issued throughout the day.
