Dover, DE – Delaware residents entering November's first full week may notice a familiar autumn contrast: chilly mornings across northern and inland communities while the state's Atlantic beaches remain comparatively mild.
The difference could become important for gardeners, commuters and residents monitoring the season's first freezing temperatures.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center, outlooks issued Wednesday, Oct. 28, cover Thursday, Nov. 5, through Wednesday, Nov. 11, and provide broad probabilities for temperature and precipitation trends.
The outlooks do not establish a specific frost advisory, freeze warning or winter weather event for Delaware during that period.
Northern Delaware's Cold Weather Concerns
Wilmington, Newark, Middletown and surrounding New Castle County communities can experience chilly November nights, especially when clear skies and light winds allow temperatures to fall.
Rural inland locations may cool more quickly than nearby urban areas.
Frost can form on exposed surfaces when conditions are favorable, sometimes even when the official air temperature remains slightly above freezing.
However, a frost event has not been confirmed for Nov. 5 11.
What About Dover and Sussex County?
Dover, Smyrna, Milford and Georgetown can also experience substantial differences between afternoon and overnight temperatures.
Farther east, Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island often benefit from the moderating influence of nearby ocean waters.
That coastal influence can reduce temperature extremes, although it does not eliminate the possibility of colder weather.
Travel and Outdoor Preparations
Drivers along Interstate 95, U.S. Route 13 and Delaware Route 1 may encounter changing morning temperatures as autumn progresses.
Freezing conditions can create hazards when moisture is present, but no specific icing event has been established for the upcoming period.
Residents with sensitive plants should monitor local overnight lows rather than relying solely on statewide temperature trends.
For now, frost and freezing nights remain seasonal possibilities, not confirmed threats for November 5 11 .
More precise National Weather Service forecasts will help identify any locations facing temperatures near or below freezing as the dates approach.
