Pueblo, CO – Southern Colorado is facing a sharp contrast in weather conditions this week, with temperatures approaching 90 degrees across parts of the eastern plains Sunday, October 11, while mountain areas see rain and potentially snow as a cooler weather pattern develops.
According to the National Weather Service NWS in Pueblo, warm conditions will persist across the plains through Tuesday, while showers continue over the mountains. Snow could become possible over the highest peaks Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Plains Could Reach the Upper 80s Sunday
Sunday's forecast shows some of the warmest temperatures across southeastern Colorado, where communities including La Junta, Lamar, Eads and Springfield could experience afternoon highs in the middle to upper 80s.
The forecast indicates a high near 89 degrees around Lamar, while Pueblo is expected to reach approximately 84 degrees.
Colorado Springs will be cooler, with a forecast high near 79 degrees.
Mountain communities will experience considerably lower temperatures, with highs around 54 degrees in Leadville and 60 degrees in Woodland Park.
Mountain Snow Chances Increase
The National Weather Service expects the heaviest precipitation to remain near the Continental Divide.
Showers over the higher terrain could transition to snow at the highest elevations Tuesday night into Wednesday, October 14, as temperatures decrease.
Snowfall amounts and potential travel impacts have not been specified in the outlook.
Cooler Weather Arrives Wednesday
A noticeable cooldown is expected across southern Colorado by Wednesday.
Pueblo's forecast high falls from approximately 84 degrees Sunday to 76 degrees Wednesday, while Colorado Springs drops from 79 to 62 degrees.
Farther east, Lamar could cool from 89 degrees Sunday to around 71 degrees Wednesday.
Wednesday also offers the best chance for showers across the plains.
What Residents Should Expect
Travelers heading into the mountains should prepare for colder conditions and monitor updated forecasts for possible snow at higher elevations.
Across the plains, residents can expect warm afternoons early in the week before temperatures trend downward.
The forecast highlights significant differences between mountain and plains conditions, making location specific weather updates especially important.
