Pueblo, CO – A significant pattern change could bring cooler temperatures, increasing rain chances and higher elevation snow to southern Colorado early next week, but the storm’s exact track and impacts remain uncertain.
The National Weather Service in Pueblo said confidence is high that rain chances will increase along the Continental Divide from Sunday through Tuesday, Oct. 11 13. Higher mountain elevations could see snow by Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Across the southeast Colorado plains, including Pueblo, the forecast is less certain because precipitation will depend heavily on the eventual storm track. The NWS said considerable differences in possible solutions remain as forecasters assess how the first system moves across the Great Basin and central Rockies.
Before the change, fall warmth continues. Pueblo is forecast to reach 86 degrees Wednesday, followed by 87 Thursday, 85 Friday, 81 Saturday and 77 Sunday. Monday's forecast high falls to 77 degrees.
Other communities show a more pronounced cooldown. Colorado Springs drops from a forecast 83 Wednesday to 73 Monday, while Leadville falls from 62 to 52. Woodland Park declines from 73 Wednesday to 63 Monday.
Moisture begins increasing along the Continental Divide Sunday, improving chances for mountain showers and thunderstorms. Rain chances continue into early next week as additional systems approach from the West and interact with tropical moisture moving northward.
The NWS cautions that details concerning the storm's strength and track remain in flux, meaning precipitation amounts and impacts on the plains cannot yet be pinned down.
Mountain travelers should monitor forecast updates, particularly for Tuesday night and Wednesday, when winter driving conditions could become possible over Continental Divide passes. For the plains, expect cooler weather next week while confidence in the extent of rain becomes clearer as the storm approaches.
