Pueblo, CO – A widespread freeze is threatening Colorado's eastern plains early Saturday, October 17, with overnight temperatures falling into the upper 20s before a significant daytime warmup. Residents across Pueblo County and surrounding southeastern Colorado communities are being urged to protect sensitive vegetation and exposed outdoor plumbing from potentially damaging cold.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Freeze Warning remains in effect across the eastern plains until 9 a.m. Saturday. Clear skies and calm winds have allowed temperatures to fall rapidly, with the coldest conditions expected shortly before sunrise.
Temperatures across the plains are forecast to reach approximately 28 to 30 degrees, although some locations immediately along the eastern mountain slopes may remain slightly warmer.
Freezing temperatures could damage unprotected plants, gardens and outdoor water lines.
Saturday Warmup Follows Freezing Morning
Despite the cold start, Saturday afternoon will bring a dramatic improvement as sunshine pushes temperatures into the lower 70s across the plains.
Regional highs are expected to reach 71 to 72 degrees, with light east southeast winds around 3 mph and virtually no chance of precipitation.
Mountain valleys will remain cooler, with afternoon temperatures between 64 and 69 degrees.
Sunday, October 18, brings additional warming across the plains, with highs reaching 72 to 74 degrees and overnight lows recovering into the upper 30s.
Valley temperatures will remain around 60 to 64 degrees.
October 19–21: Mountain Moisture Returns
By Monday, October 19, plains temperatures should remain near 71 to 72 degrees, while mountain valleys experience highs around 60 to 63 degrees.
The Weather Service expects moisture to gradually return to Colorado's mountains early next week, increasing precipitation chances in higher elevations.
October 22–26 Extended Weather Outlook
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center favors above normal temperatures across Colorado during October 22–26, suggesting the broader warming pattern could continue into late October.
The precipitation outlook also favors above normal precipitation across much of Colorado, particularly in the western and central portions of the state.
This longer range outlook does not guarantee rainfall or snowfall at any specific location but indicates an increased likelihood of wetter conditions.
For southeastern Colorado residents, the immediate priority remains protecting vulnerable plants and outdoor plumbing from Saturday morning's freezing temperatures before warmer afternoon weather returns.
