NEBRASKA – Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island and North Platte are approaching winter 2026 27 with a reminder that Nebraska's snowfall history remains significant despite changing seasonal patterns. A statewide weather station average of 31.11 inches annually illustrates the state's winter climate, while El Niño does not eliminate blizzards, dangerous cold or highway disruptions. Winter storms can continue through March.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA , its October 15, 2026, outlook for December through February favors above normal temperatures across Nebraska. Precipitation probabilities are less decisive, with much of the state showing equal chances of above , near or below normal totals. These seasonal outlooks do not predict snowfall amounts or individual storms.
What Nebraska's Snowfall History Actually Shows Nebraska's historical 31.11 inch snowfall figure represents an average across weather stations, not the snowfall normal for Omaha, Lincoln or any individual community.
Snowfall varies across the state. Western communities near Scottsbluff and Chadron experience different winter conditions than eastern population centers, while open terrain increases exposure to blowing and drifting snow.
NOAA historical maps examining El Niño winters from 1950 through 2009 show generally reduced snowfall across portions of the northern Plains, although Nebraska's departures vary geographically.
Those maps do not establish a directly comparable statewide El Niño snowfall average.
Below average snowfall still can include significant individual winter storms.
Why El Niño Doesn't Guarantee an Easy Winter El Niño influences Pacific storm tracks and the jet stream, often shifting winter precipitation patterns farther south.
However, Nebraska remains vulnerable to Arctic air outbreaks and strong Plains low pressure systems.
When Gulf moisture encounters freezing temperatures, storms can produce heavy snow, freezing rain or dangerous wind driven conditions.
Even a winter averaging warmer than normal can experience severe cold and substantial snowfall during individual weather events.
What This Means Through March Drivers along Interstate 80 between Omaha and North Platte, Interstate 76 near the Colorado border and U.S. Highway 81 through Norfolk and Columbus should remain prepared for icy pavement, reduced visibility and drifting snow.
Western Nebraska's exposed highways can become especially hazardous during strong winds.
NOAA's December–February outlook does not cover March 2027, when significant Plains snowstorms remain possible.
El Niño changes Nebraska's seasonal weather probabilities, but it does not guarantee a snow free or disruption free winter.
