GRAND JUNCTION, CO – Western Colorado is heading into a cooler, wetter weekend as near record warmth Friday gives way to increasing rain chances Saturday, with temperatures falling more than 10 degrees in several communities by Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a storm system moving into the Great Basin will combine with moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Rachel, bringing a shift in weather conditions across the Western Slope.
Friday's temperatures are expected to reach 84 degrees in Grand Junction, 89 in Moab, 83 in Delta and 79 in Montrose. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible Friday afternoon over the Uinta Mountains and central Colorado mountains.
Cloud cover will increase later Friday as moisture moves into the region. Rain chances are expected to increase after midnight around the Four Corners before spreading north and east early Saturday.
In Grand Junction, temperatures are forecast to fall from 84 degrees Friday to 77 Saturday and 71 Sunday. The Weather Service projects precipitation of less than one tenth of an inch Saturday, with up to one quarter inch possible Sunday.
Farther south, Durango is expected to cool from 76 degrees Friday to 68 Saturday and 62 Sunday, with precipitation ranging from one tenth to one quarter inch Saturday and one half to 1 inch Sunday.
Pagosa Springs could see some of the wetter conditions, with one half to 1 inch of precipitation possible Sunday. Cortez could receive one quarter to one half inch.
Moab is forecast to drop from 89 degrees Friday to 76 Sunday, while Vernal could fall from 78 to 61 during the same period.
The forecast indicates a widespread cooling trend, although rainfall amounts will vary considerably by location.
Residents across western Colorado and eastern Utah should expect increasing clouds Friday, expanding rain chances Saturday and cooler temperatures continuing into Sunday.
