Grand Junction, CO – Near record warmth will continue across the sunny valleys of western Colorado Wednesday, Oct. 7, while showers and thunderstorms develop over favored mountain areas during the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, temperatures across the region will run about 10 to 15 degrees above normal Wednesday. The agency said some valleys will contend with near record high temperatures again during the afternoon.
The warmth comes as high pressure remains influential across the region. However, a weak disturbance interacting with moisture moving across the ridge will provide enough instability for another round of mountain showers and thunderstorms.
The San Juan Mountains and central Colorado mountains have the highest probability for showers, according to the NWS. Storm development is expected mainly during the afternoon.
Conditions will be different in many lower elevation valleys, where sunshine and unusually warm temperatures will be the main weather story. The NWS graphic indicates partly cloudy to cloudy skies in some areas but does not provide specific high temperatures or precipitation probabilities.
The agency describes the valley temperatures as near record highs , rather than forecasting that records will definitely be broken. No specific record values were included in the outlook.
The mountain thunderstorm potential also does not apply uniformly across western Colorado. The San Juans and central mountains are specifically favored for the greatest shower chances, while other locations may remain dry.
Residents and visitors should expect another unusually warm October afternoon in the valleys Wednesday, while those heading into the mountains should be prepared for developing showers and thunderstorms later in the day.
