Grand Junction, CO – A significant round of mountain snow is expected to impact parts of western and central Colorado beginning Sunday, with up to 10 inches of accumulation and gusty winds potentially creating difficult travel conditions across several high elevation routes.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for elevations above 10,000 feet, beginning at noon Sunday, Nov. 1, and continuing through 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2.
Forecasters expect widespread accumulations of 5 to 10 inches of snow in the affected high elevations , with locally higher amounts possible.
Winds could gust as high as 35 mph, potentially reducing visibility and creating additional challenges for drivers navigating mountain roads.
The advisory covers the Flat Tops, Gore and Elk Mountains, central mountain valleys, Grand and Battlement Mesas, and the West Elk and Sawatch Mountains.
Communities and travel destinations within the advisory area include Aspen, Snowmass, Vail, Minturn, Crested Butte, Marble, Taylor Park and Skyway.
Mountain passes and high elevation routes, including Vail Pass, Monarch Pass and McClure Pass, could experience deteriorating driving conditions as snowfall develops.
The National Weather Service warns that travel could become very difficult , particularly in locations where snow accumulates rapidly or strong winds affect visibility.
Drivers traveling through Colorado's mountain corridors Sunday afternoon and Monday should prepare for winter driving conditions, allow additional travel time and exercise caution.
The advisory applies specifically to elevations above 10,000 feet, meaning lower elevation communities may experience substantially different conditions.
Travelers should also be aware that the transition from daylight saving time early Sunday morning will affect local time references during the advisory period.
Officials encourage motorists to check current highway conditions before departure by calling 511.
The Winter Weather Advisory is scheduled to expire Monday evening, although travelers should continue monitoring updated forecasts and road conditions.
