Denver, CO – Three words in a winter weather warning could signal an exceptionally dangerous storm across Colorado during the 2026 27 winter season. From Denver and Colorado Springs to Fort Collins and the eastern plains, residents should recognize the rare wording before severe winter conditions develop.
According to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, the National Weather Service is expanding the use of "Particularly Dangerous Situation," or PDS, wording in select Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings.
The language is intended for rare storms posing extraordinary threats to lives, transportation and critical infrastructure.
What Are the Three Words Colorado Residents Should Know?
"Particularly Dangerous Situation" highlights exceptional danger within an existing winter weather warning.
In a Blizzard Warning, PDS wording could emphasize life threatening conditions involving powerful winds and severely reduced visibility from falling or blowing snow.
In an Ice Storm Warning, it could highlight potentially devastating ice accumulation.
Why Could This Matter Across Colorado?
Colorado's winter hazards vary significantly between the mountains, Front Range and eastern plains.
Denver, Aurora and Boulder can experience heavy snowfall and powerful winds, while Colorado Springs, Castle Rock and Monument face rapidly changing conditions along Interstate 25.
Fort Collins, Greeley and eastern Colorado communities are vulnerable to blowing snow and dangerous whiteouts across open highways.
Mountain communities near Vail, Silverthorne, Breckenridge and the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnels can experience intense snowfall and hazardous travel.
During an extreme event, Interstate 70 between Denver and the mountains, Interstate 25 along the Front Range, and Interstate 76 across northeastern Colorado could become hazardous or impassable.
Blizzard conditions can strand motorists, disrupt emergency response and create dangerous exposure risks.
These are possible impacts, not predictions of an approaching storm.
Is PDS a New Winter Weather Warning?
No. PDS is additional wording within certain existing Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings, not a separate warning category.
Most Colorado winter storms will not receive the designation.
What Should Colorado Residents Do?
If PDS wording appears in a local warning, residents should avoid unnecessary travel, follow emergency instructions and prepare for prolonged disruptions.
Drivers should check Colorado Department of Transportation road conditions before traveling.
The expanded terminology does not mean a catastrophic winter storm is currently forecast for Colorado.
