Colorado Springs, CO – Thunderstorms could bring dangerous wind gusts, lightning and heavy rainfall to parts of southern Colorado Sunday, October 11, with stronger storms capable of producing winds near 50 mph in the eastern San Juan Mountains.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Hazardous Weather Outlook identifies scattered to widespread thunderstorms along the Continental Divide and Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Stronger storms could develop across the eastern San Juan Mountains Sunday afternoon into early evening.
Mountain Storms Bring Greatest Threat
Forecasters identify cloud to ground lightning, moderate rainfall and wind gusts reaching 45 mph as the primary storm hazards.
Stronger thunderstorms could produce gusts approaching 50 mph, along with small hail and periods of moderate to heavy rainfall.
Hikers, campers and mountain travelers should monitor developing storms and seek shelter when thunder approaches.
The stronger storm potential is concentrated in mountain areas, rather than across the entire Colorado Springs metropolitan area.
Warm Weather Continues Across the Plains
Colorado Springs will remain mostly sunny Sunday, with a high near 82 degrees and non thunderstorm wind gusts potentially reaching 30 mph.
Monday, October 12, brings sunshine and a high near 79 degrees, followed by another sunny day Tuesday with temperatures reaching 73 degrees.
Wednesday Brings Rain and Cooler Air
A Pacific storm system will introduce cooler conditions Wednesday, October 14.
Colorado Springs faces a 60% chance of showers, with thunderstorms possible during the afternoon. Highs fall to approximately 62 degrees.
Light mountain snowfall is also possible Tuesday and Wednesday, primarily across higher elevations.
Wednesday night's temperatures could fall near 41 degrees.
Cooler Conditions Continue
Thursday brings a 20% shower chance and highs near 62 degrees.
Friday turns sunny but cooler, with a high near 58 degrees, before temperatures rebound to approximately 65 degrees Saturday.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts, particularly when traveling into the mountains.
