Colorado Springs, CO – A sharp weekend weather change could bring gusty winds, widespread showers and much colder temperatures to the Colorado Springs area beginning Saturday, October 24. After Friday's expected high near 73 degrees, temperatures are forecast to reach only 57 Saturday before falling to approximately 36 degrees Saturday night. The National Weather Service projects a 90% chance of precipitation during that period, while a broader storm system threatens heavy rain, thunderstorms and mountain snowfall elsewhere across southern Colorado.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Pacific storm system is affecting portions of central, south central and southeastern Colorado. Its hazardous weather outlook, issued Friday morning, highlights several threats through the weekend, including heavy precipitation, strong thunderstorms and accumulating snow at higher elevations. While the most significant hazards are not expected everywhere, the system could create changing travel conditions across multiple parts of the region.
Saturday Brings Gusty Winds and Increasing Rain Friday provides a temporary break around Colorado Springs, with gradual clearing and afternoon temperatures reaching approximately 73 degrees. South winds of 5 to 15 mph are expected before partly cloudy skies develop Friday night and temperatures fall to around 46 degrees.
Saturday brings a noticeable change as clouds increase and showers become possible, especially after 3 p.m. The National Weather Service forecasts a 40% precipitation chance during the afternoon, with northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph and gusts reaching 35 mph. The combination of cooler temperatures and stronger winds could make outdoor conditions considerably less comfortable than Friday.
Saturday night carries the highest precipitation probability for Colorado Springs, reaching 90%. Showers are expected as temperatures fall to approximately 36 degrees. The local forecast indicates less than one tenth of an inch of new precipitation during that period, despite the high probability of rain.
Heavy Rain, Strong Storms and Mountain Snow Elsewhere across southern Colorado, the National Weather Service warns that widespread showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday could produce moderate to heavy rainfall. Areas of the far eastern plains, particularly east of a line extending from Crowley County toward eastern Las Animas County, could receive approximately 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain.
The strongest storms Saturday could produce wind gusts up to 50 mph and small hail. Separately, Friday's outlook identifies a potential for hail up to 1 inch, wind gusts to 60 mph and an isolated tornado along the southern border and portions of the far eastern plains. Those Friday hazards should not be interpreted as a tornado forecast specifically for Colorado Springs.
Higher elevations face another concern as snow levels drop toward 9,000 feet. Mountain peaks could receive 4 to 8 inches of new snow through Sunday, potentially complicating travel along exposed mountain routes.
For Colorado Springs drivers using Interstate 25, U.S. Highway 24 and surrounding roads, Saturday's gusty winds and periods of rain could affect visibility and driving comfort. Travelers heading into mountain areas should check road conditions before departure.
Cooler Conditions Continue Into Sunday Sunday remains unsettled around Colorado Springs, with a 40% chance of showers mainly before noon and an afternoon high near 53 degrees. Rain chances increase again Sunday night to 70%, with thunderstorms possible and temperatures falling to approximately 37 degrees.
By Monday, conditions begin improving, although a slight chance of showers and afternoon thunderstorms remains. Temperatures recover to around 58 degrees before sunnier weather returns Tuesday.
Residents planning weekend travel should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts, particularly for mountain snowfall and thunderstorms farther east.
