Boulder, CO – Two people were found dead Monday after search crews located the wreckage of a missing single engine aircraft in rugged terrain south of Boulder, ending an overnight search with no survivors.
According to the Boulder County Sheriff 's Office, a MedEvac helicopter and Civil Air Patrol located the crash site at approximately 10:15 a.m. Monday. The wreckage was found north of Eldorado Canyon State Park and south of the Flatirons.
Aircraft were joined by the Boulder Emergency Squad's drone team as rescuers worked to reach the difficult terrain. Crews arrived at the crash site around noon and located two deceased individuals. Authorities said no survivors were found.
The search began after the Boulder County Communications Center received a call from the U.S. Air Force Rescue Coordination Center at approximately 9:42 p.m. Sunday regarding a possible downed aircraft.
Authorities said an emergency beacon from a private single engine, fixed wing aircraft had activated near Eldorado Springs, where the plane was also last detected on radar. The aircraft had departed from Vance Brand Airport in Longmont.
Crews searched overnight, including with night vision equipment from a MedEvac helicopter, before ground and aerial operations resumed Monday morning.
The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the crash investigation and is expected to have a team at the scene Tuesday. The Boulder County Coroner's Office is separately investigating the cause and manner of death.
The victims' names will be released after positive identification and notification of their families.
