ALAMOSA, CO – Temperatures could fall as low as 33 degrees across portions of Colorado's San Luis Valley early Friday, Oct. 9, prompting a Frost Advisory that remains in effect until 9 a.m. MDT.
The National Weather Service in Pueblo confirmed the advisory at 1:58 a.m. Friday, warning that temperatures near freezing could allow frost to form and damage sensitive outdoor vegetation.
The advisory covers the southern San Luis Valley and surrounding valley areas below 8,500 feet, including Alamosa, Monte Vista, Del Norte, Center, San Luis, Antonito, Blanca, Fort Garland, Manassa, Sanford and La Jara.
Frost could harm tender plants and potentially kill sensitive outdoor vegetation left uncovered, according to the weather service.
Residents with gardens, flowers or other cold sensitive plants are urged to take protective measures before temperatures reach their lowest levels. Covering vulnerable vegetation or moving potted plants indoors can help reduce exposure to the cold.
Although the forecast low of 33 degrees is slightly above freezing, frost can still develop on exposed surfaces when conditions are favorable.
The advisory is specifically for frost conditions and does not indicate a broader winter storm threat.
The affected areas include portions of the northern, central and southern San Luis Valley, with the weather service identifying elevations below 8,500 feet in its advisory coverage.
Residents should pay particular attention to gardens and outdoor plants during the remaining early morning hours Friday.
The Frost Advisory is scheduled to expire at 9 a.m. MDT Friday, when the period of concern identified by the National Weather Service ends. Residents should continue protecting sensitive vegetation until the frost threat has passed.
