San Francisco, CA – The San Francisco Bay Area could be heading toward a cooler and wetter start to November, with federal forecasters favoring below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation as October comes to an end. Before that longer range pattern begins, San Francisco faces a 70% chance of showers Wednesday, followed by a return to sunnier conditions later this week.
According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, the eight to 14 day temperature and precipitation outlooks issued Sunday, Oct. 18, favor below normal average temperatures across much of Northern and Central California during Oct. 26–Nov. 1. The precipitation outlook also favors above normal totals, placing the Bay Area within a broader western pattern that could bring wetter than usual conditions as November begins.
San Francisco faces 70% rain chance Wednesday The National Weather Service forecast for San Francisco shows Monday reaching approximately 62 degrees under mostly sunny skies.
Tuesday brings mostly cloudy conditions and a high near 65 degrees.
Rain chances increase Tuesday night, when the forecast calls for a 50% chance of showers after 11 p.m. The weather service indicates new precipitation amounts of less than one tenth of an inch are possible.
Wednesday is expected to be the wettest day in the supplied forecast based on precipitation probability.
Showers are likely, mainly before 11 a.m., with a 70% chance of precipitation and a high near 65 degrees.
The forecast again indicates rainfall amounts of less than one tenth of an inch are possible during the daytime period.
Wednesday night carries a 40% chance of showers, followed by a slight chance of additional showers before 11 a.m. Thursday.
Thursday's high is expected to reach approximately 64 degrees.
Conditions improve Friday, with sunshine and a high near 65 degrees. Saturday and Sunday are forecast to reach around 66 degrees, although slight rain chances return over the weekend.
Bay Area favors cooler temperatures heading into November NOAA's extended temperature outlook places the San Francisco Bay Area within a region favoring below normal temperatures during Oct. 26–Nov. 1.
The cooler than normal signal extends across much of Northern California, including the North Coast and Sacramento Valley.
The precipitation outlook also favors above normal totals across much of the region, including the Bay Area.
For San Francisco and surrounding communities in Oakland, Berkeley and San Mateo County, the extended pattern suggests increased potential for cooler and wetter conditions as November begins.
However, NOAA's maps do not establish specific rainfall totals, daily high temperatures or the timing of individual storms.
The temperature probabilities indicate the likelihood of below normal average conditions, not how many degrees below normal temperatures will fall.
What the November transition means for Bay Area residents Unlike inland California communities facing larger temperature swings this week, San Francisco's immediate forecast remains relatively steady.
Afternoon highs are expected to stay mostly in the lower to middle 60s, with overnight temperatures generally in the 50s.
That means the most noticeable short term change may come from increasing clouds and rain rather than a dramatic temperature drop.
Separately, the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center's Oct. 19 discussion highlighted showers and thunderstorms spreading into portions of central and southern California Tuesday. That earlier forecast is distinct from NOAA's Oct. 26–Nov. 1 outlook.
For Bay Area commuters, Wednesday's rain could bring wet road surfaces during the morning, although the supplied forecast does not establish flooding or major travel disruptions.
As November approaches, updated forecasts will help clarify whether the cooler and wetter pattern produces additional rain opportunities across the region.
Are you ready for a wetter start to November in the Bay Area, or would you rather keep the mild, sunny afternoons a little longer?
