San Francisco, CA – Residents and motorists along the San Francisco Bay Area and Central California coast face an extended coastal flooding threat through Friday, Oct. 30, as unusually high tides could push water into vulnerable shoreline communities. Forecasters warn that inundation reaching 2.1 feet above ground level is possible in some low lying locations, potentially forcing temporary road closures.
According to the National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area/Monterey office, a Coastal Flood Advisory has been extended until 5 p.m. Friday, affecting bayshore locations along San Pablo Bay, San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay, along with low lying areas of the Pacific coast.
The greatest concern centers on periods of peak high tide , when rising water levels could flood streets, parking areas and other locations near shorelines and tidal waterways.
Communities surrounding San Francisco, Oakland, San Rafael, San Jose, Santa Cruz and Monterey should monitor conditions in flood prone coastal areas, particularly where roads sit close to sea level.
The advisory covers vulnerable shoreline locations rather than entire cities, meaning flooding impacts will vary considerably depending on elevation and proximity to tidal waters.
Travel disruptions are possible through Friday afternoon. The National Weather Service warns that minor coastal flooding may cause road closures in low lying areas, requiring drivers to allow additional travel time.
Motorists should never drive around barricades or enter flooded roadways where water depth is unknown. Even relatively shallow flooding can conceal road damage or create hazardous driving conditions.
Property owners near tidal areas are also encouraged to take precautions to protect belongings and structures susceptible to coastal flooding.
The advisory does not mean widespread flooding is expected throughout the Bay Area. The primary threat involves localized inundation near shorelines during high tides.
Residents planning coastal travel or activities through Friday should check the latest National Weather Service updates and local road conditions before departing.
