San Francisco, CA – Coastal communities across the San Francisco Bay Area and Monterey Bay are facing an extended flooding threat through Halloween, with unusually high tides potentially sending nearly 2 feet of water into vulnerable shoreline areas and disrupting travel.
According to the National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area/Monterey office, a Coastal Flood Advisory has been extended through 6 p.m. Saturday, October 31, for bayshore locations along San Pablo Bay, San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay.
Meanwhile, low lying communities along the Pacific Coast remain under a separate Coastal Flood Advisory through 5 p.m. Friday, October 30.
Forecasters warn that up to 1.9 feet of inundation above ground level is possible in low lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways during peak high tides.
The flooding could affect roads, parking areas and properties near the water, particularly in locations already vulnerable to tidal flooding.
Communities surrounding San Francisco Bay, including portions of Marin, Sonoma, Napa and the South Bay, could experience localized impacts.
Coastal areas around Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay are also included in the advisory.
The National Weather Service cautions that minor coastal flooding may force temporary road closures, potentially creating delays for motorists traveling through affected communities.
Drivers are urged to allow additional travel time and avoid flooded roads.
Officials specifically warn motorists not to drive around barricades or enter floodwater of unknown depth.
Even relatively shallow flooding can create dangerous driving conditions, particularly along low lying coastal routes.
Residents and businesses near tidal waterways are also encouraged to take precautions to protect flood prone property.
The advisory comes as communities prepare for Halloween weekend, when additional travel and outdoor activities may increase exposure to flooded coastal roadways.
The National Weather Service continues monitoring tidal conditions and urges residents to check updated advisories before traveling near the coast.
