SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Coastal communities across the San Francisco Bay Area face an elevated flooding threat through Halloween weekend, with unusually high tides potentially pushing water onto low lying roads, shoreline infrastructure and waterfront properties through Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. PDT Sunday, Nov. 1, covering shoreline locations around San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay and Monterey Bay.
High Tides Could Cause Flooding and Road Closures Forecasters warn that up to 1.9 feet of inundation above ground level is possible in vulnerable low lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
The advisory includes coastal areas of Marin County, where more substantial flooding impacts are anticipated.
High tides could flood shoreline infrastructure, produce isolated road closures and accelerate coastal erosion.
Rising water may also push waves farther inland along beaches and waterfront areas than normally expected.
Peak Tides Expected Friday and Saturday The National Weather Service forecasts elevated tides at the San Francisco tidal gauge during several periods:
Friday, Oct. 30, at 2:39 p.m.: 1.9 feet above normal. Saturday, Oct. 31, at 3:44 p.m.: 1.5 feet above normal. Sunday, Nov. 1, at 3:59 p.m.: 1 foot above normal. These figures represent predicted tide levels above normal, not uniform flooding depths across the region.
Forecasters also indicate that up to 1.5 feet of surge could enhance the flooding threat.
Drivers Urged to Avoid Flooded Roads Residents traveling near coastal roads, waterfront parking areas and tidal waterways should allow additional travel time.
The National Weather Service advises motorists not to drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
San Francisco's weekend forecast otherwise calls for mostly sunny conditions Friday, highs near 65 degrees and a slight chance of rain Saturday night.
Despite generally mild weather, coastal flooding remains possible during high tide periods.
Residents should monitor updated National Weather Service advisories and local road conditions through Sunday evening.
